up 和 down 既是介词，又是副词，它们除了可分别表示"向上"和"向下"外，还有其他的意义。
1. up 和 down 都可表示"沿着"，相当于along；或表示"在远端"，相当于at the far end of。
2. up 还常用来表示向高处，向重要的地方，向北方，向城市，向安静的住宅区及大学等。
down 则常用来表示向低处，向次要的地方，向南方，向乡村，向热闹的商业区及离开大学等。
up和down的相似词义及用法：
第一，burn down：destroy（sth.）or be destroyed by fire,烧毁。A fire burnt the house down in half an hour.大火在半小时内将房子烧毁了。
第二，“烧毁”的另一个短语为：burn up＝destroy（sth.）or be destroyed completely by fire。意为“（被）烧光”。例如，The fire burnt up more than $50 000 worth of goods.大火烧掉了价值5万美元的货物。
