创作背景
《牧羊少年奇幻之旅》取材于《一千零一夜》和作者的切身体验。
柯艾略年轻时钟情于对神秘事物的研究。他曾经用11年的时间去研究炼金术。在柯艾略的时代，关于炼金术的研究成果并不多。在炼金术上，柯艾略耗费了巨大的精力，他用仅有的钱购买进口图书，去拜见相关领域的专家（他们都拒绝接见他），认真研究书中的奇怪的符号。
后来，柯艾略加入了拉姆教派，并结识了他的导师。导师告诉他，炼金术士有三种：第一种讲话之所以空洞是因为他们不知道自己正在说些什么；第二种讲话之所以空洞是因为他们知道自己正在说些什么，而且还知道炼金术的语言所指向的是心灵而不是理智。
