我个人觉得，要区分这两种从句的区别不难，它们有个共同点，就是引导词前都是名词，比如你写的news，不同的是这个名词和从句的关系，如果news的内容就是从句的内容，从句是名词的解释说明，那就是同位语，（同个位置的）如果从句的内容是修饰限定名词（也就是先行词）的，那就叫定语（定语的作用被就是修饰，多是形容次和名词做定语）。比如你给的例子：that he told me yesterday是用来修饰限定news的，要译为：他昨天告诉我的消息，很明显，从句是修饰名词（先行词）的，相当于先行词的形容词。如果句子是这样：the news that an expert will come to our school was true.很明显，从句和名词news间没有修饰关系，只有解释说明的关系，即news的内容是an expert will come to our school，专家要来我们学校也指的就是这个消息，从句与名词间是相等的，都是名词的成分，都做主语，所以叫同位语。 不知道我这样说你能不能看懂？
