“癌”这个词最早特指上皮组织的恶性肿瘤，但是现在大部分恶性肿瘤都可以称为癌症，包括非上皮组织形成的。这些癌症也不一定来源于上皮细胞，比如白血病也称为血癌，起源是造血干细胞。这里是美国国家癌症研究所(National Cancer Institute)对癌症的定义：Cancer is a term used for diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control and are able to invade other tissues.
