These men belived in journalism as a calling，and were proud to be published in the daily press.
其中的to be published为什么用被动，主语是these men不是应该表达成were proud to publish么?

一， publish在维基词典上有以下二种解释：

1，To issue (something, such as printed work) for distribution and/or sale. 

出版发行【刊印的作品】。

2，To issue the work of (an author).

出版发行【某位作者】的作品。

二，注意 publish的第二个解释里已经【隐式的】包含有【作品 】二个字在publish之中了。所以：were proud to be published里的to be published这个被动形式，也就不需要【显示的】表明逻辑主语【work作品】了。

三，如果用issue来造句的话，就应该显示表明逻辑主语。如：

and were proud for【their works】 to be issued in the daily press.

【他们以自己的作品被刊行在每日新闻中而引以自豪】 。这句话等同于：

and were proud to be published in the daily press.

只不过这句话里逻辑主语【work作品】是隐式表明的罢了。

四，these men were proud to publish 的意思应该是：

这些人以出版发行某些作家的书而为荣。【也就说这些人成出版商了】。

五，以上有个人猜测成分，仅供参考。

这句话的意思是这些男人很自豪登上报纸。
而真正意思是他们的事迹被报道出来，被别人写成文章登在报纸上，如果是主动形式，就是他们自己去出版自己。说不通。

英语母语的人所写的文章，在英语语法部分不能太讲究，能理解即可。
