然后呢 he could not bear it. 意思就是他不能抚养(大多数是指孩子) he could not suffer it. 意思就是他不能忍受. he could not stand it. 意思就是 他不能忍受 和 suffer it 差不多

suffer is to experience something causing physical or mental pain.

suffer如果用于表示忍受那是比较夸张的说法（取其严肃意思），中文里也有这样的用法。
