【含义】
in the afternoon泛指“下午”，
on the afternoon一般指具体某一天的下午。
【用法】
in有在……里，在……地方以及在……期间的意思；on表示在……之上；当我们在用英语表达某些东西被包围时往往会用in这个单词，但on主要是用来描述某一件东西被放在其它物品之上或放在其他物品外部。in可以用来表示时间，表示地点，表示方法手段和材料，还可以表示年、月、季节、时代以及世纪；on只能表示时间，地点和方位。
