一，fell downstairs
二，fell down the stairs

第一种情况，downstairs属于副词，表示向楼下的方向
第二种情况，fell down属于bipartite verb,和fell意思有所不同，不是发生在点上，而是tumble down的语录摔下来滚下来的意思，，后面需要接宾语，这里down是介词。

但口语中，经常把downstairs分开使用，down stairs，这就是楼上说的，idiomatically correct.追答

因为这是成语（idiom）。如果加一个from就会变成林语堂说的＂grammatically correct but idiomatically wrong. ＂

fell down是phrasal verb，fell 是verb，down是preposition，stairs是noun。追问
