POPULARIZATION OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
1.Introduction on Workshop Proceedings
This report reflects the suggestions made during the Workshop on the Popularization of Science and Technology, held in Rio de Janeiro from February 2 to 5, 2004 as part of the Project in Hemispheric Cooperation in the Development of Science and Technology Policy being implemented by the Office of Science and Technology (OST) of the Organization of American States (OAS). The Member States of the OAS approved the project at the Special Meeting of the Inter-American Committee on Science and Technology (COMCYT) for the purpose of generating hemispheric science and
technology policies and strategies, in accordance with the areas established as priorities by COMCYT.
The Workshop on the Popularization of Science and Technology was organized by the Office of Science and Technology of the OAS, the Museu de Astronomia e Ciências Afins, and the Ministry of Science and Technology of Brazil. It assembled specialists and representatives of national science and technology agencies from 12 countries in the Americas: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Peru, the United States, Uruguay, and Venezuela.
Presentations were given on experiences with popularizing science in some countries and on practical and theoretical elements of this field.
Workshop participants then decided on four core topics, which were discussed in four working groups created to delve into each subject, i.e.: cooperation policies and measures for popularizing science; popularization of science and social inclusion; agents of popularization of science; and the relationship between the popularization of science and formal and nonformal education.
At the end of each group’s meeting, the group coordinators presented their respective results and contributions, after which all participants had the opportunity to share comments, suggestions, and criticism.
