A strong earthquake hit a tea-making city in southwest China on Sunday, killing at least two people, injuring 200, causing houses to collapse and damaging roads.
The earthquake shook the old town of Hani and Yi Autonomous County of Ning'er of Pu'er City at 5:34 a.m. on Sunday, with the epicenter at 23.0 degrees north latitude and 101.1 degrees east longitude, according to the latest information from the China Earthquake Administration.
By 9:20 a.m. the earthquake has left two people dead, 15 seriously injured and 192 others slightly hurt in the county, about 80 kilometers from the city center, said sources of the rescue work headquarters.
The local seismic bureau has recorded 55 aftershocks by 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, with the strongest one measuring 4 on the Richter scale.
Some houses near the county collapsed and roads are severely destroyed. The communication network, and water and power suppliesto the county are also affected.
The government of Pu'er City has allocated one million yuan forrelieving the disaster. The provincial civil affairs department are sending 2,000 tents, 2,000 quilts and 2,000 items of clothes to the stricken area.
Ning'er County, covering an area of 3,670 square kilometers, has a population of 190,000.
Pu'er City, originally called "Simao" before it was renamed "Pu'er" on April 8, is prone to strong earthquakes. It has experienced 20 quakes above magnitude of 5 since 1990.
Pu'er, home of the tea of the same name, lies near to the border with Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam. The epicentre of the quake was 23.0 degrees north and 101.1 degrees east.
Pu'er tea dates back to the early Tang Dynasty (618-763). Over the centuries it was used as a form of currency in China and was an important international trading item.
Residents in Lincang City and Dai Autonomous Prefecture of Xishuangbanna in the south of the province, about 200 kilometers and 300 kilometers from the epicenter, have also felt the tremor. Further information is not immediately available.
Officials in charge of the rescue department of the China Earthquake Administration have rushed to the stricken area to joinlocal rescue efforts.
