4. Numerical solution procedure
The solution proceeds as follows:
1. The program starts with the initial guess of center point
of the undeformed roll, deformed roll radius and neutral
point. The initial guess of deformed radius is taken from
Hitchcock’s formula, by running the FEM code with rigid
roll to find out the separating force.
2. The contact arc length is estimated. This contact arclength is subjected to modification in due course of algorithm,
depending upon the exit roll slope. If the roll
slope for a particular value of arc length happens to be
less than zero, then the arc length is increased.
3. The mesh is generated as per desired reduction and current
roll radius.
4. The undeformed and deformed roll profiles are shown in
Fig. 2. Assumption is that, the entry point in both the
cases remains same. In the beginning, it is assumed that
center of deformed roll profile lies on a line joining the
center of undeformed roll and the mid-point of the arc.
