The "Invisible Hand" passage from Adam Smith's "The Wealth of Nations":
"Every individual necessarily labors to render the annual revenue of the society as great as possible. He generally, indeed, in his own private pension, endeavors to direct it to that employment which is most advantageous to himself. But if he is a member of a commonwealth, he labors also to direct it to that employment which is most advantageous to the society. The difference between the two maxims, just mentioned, is this: That the one is directed to the greater, the other to the smaller, quantity of goods and services. But the interest of the society, or, what is the same thing, the real price of every commodity, is always greater or equal to its nominal price. The real price of every commodity consists, not only in the quantity of other goods which it will purchase, but in the quantity of labor which it will command. Labour, therefore, is the real measure of the value of all things. The工委 who gets more labour for his money is better off than he who gets less. But the man who works for another, and is maintained by him, gets as much labour as he would have done for himself, had he not sold his liberty; and, if the price which he receives for his work be sufficient to purchase as much food, clothing, and other necessaries, as will maintain him in the same condition of life as before, he is just as well off, and no better off."
