Thank you for your letter of May 3, inwhich you asked me for my advice concerning whether you should study history orcomputer science at university. I am rather glad to make some usefulsuggestions.
First of all, you should bear in mind that, above all, your university training is a preparation for your future career. Therefore, your first consideration should be to study a subject which willbest equip you to earn a living. There is no doubt that the field of computersoffers far wider job opportunities than history.
Furthermore, we are now in the age of thehigh-technology revolution. For the foreseeable future, not only will it benecessary for everyone to be computer-literate, it will also be necessaryfor them to be armed with computerskills merely to earn a living! History, I am afraid, however fascinating itmight be, offers few career prospects.
Of course, you don't have to dedicate allyour time at university to studying computers and nothing else. On thecontrary, I would recommend that you keep on your reading of history in yourleisure time. Therefore, you will find that your leisure hours are enrichedwhile you prepare yourself for a worthwhile career in computers.
Wishyou every success.
