而what与其后面的句子可以看作一个名词性部分，来补全句子的意思．

where通常是引导地点状语从句．
可以这样来区别：将where引导的地点状语去掉，不影响整个句子的意思
将what和后面的部分去掉，则不能构成完整的句子
比如：The class went on with the story where they had left it before the holiday.
去掉where引导的部分成为The class went on with the story 也是正确的句子．

what引导的是宾语从句，是不需要用先行词的，直接接在介词或者及物动词的后面就行了。

然后再加which或者where。第二题也是一样，用which，必须加先行词a place，用where那么必须在后面的句子中做地点状语，而后面这句的缺的是主语。
