contemplate（沉思）：观鸟占卜时的观察和沉思
单词 contemplate 由拉丁文 com 和 templum 构成，其中的 com 表示加强语气， templum 表示“用于观鸟占卜的一片区域”，单词 temple（神殿，寺院） 就来源于此。
temple 起初的确是一种“空中楼阁”。古代罗马占卜都伸出双手，在天空中划出一个区域，称之为 templum ，声言这是一个神圣的区域，然后他煞有介事地凝望着这片天空，根据天空中的风云变幻的各种征象予卜未来。占卜者也常用同样的方法在地面上划出这样的区域，也称之为 templum. 后来又指在地面上这些“神圣的区域内建筑的房舍、殿堂、院落”；拼法也渐渐变为 temple，寺庙和神殿也是人们沉思的地方。
因此 contemplate 的本意是“划出 一片区域，然后仔细观察”。
contemplate 既含有“注视”的意思，又含有“沉思”的意思，因为占卜时需要在仔细观察的同时思考所见迹象所表示的吉凶意味。
