谚语的英语翻译是proverb.
谚语是指广泛流传于民间的言简意赅的短语，英语翻译是proverb。多数谚语反映了劳动人民的生活实践经验，而且一般是经过口头传下来的。它多是口语形式的通俗易懂的短句或韵语。人们生活中常用的现成的话。谚语类似成语，但口语性强，通俗易懂，而且一般表达一个完整的意思，形式上差不多都是一两个短句。
谚语内容包括极广，有的是农用谚语，如“清明前后，栽瓜种豆”；有的是事理谚语，如“种瓜得瓜，种豆得豆”；有的属于生活上各方面的常识谚语，如“谦虚使人进步，骄傲使人落后。”“饭后百步走，活到九十九。”等，类别繁多，数不胜数。谚语跟成语一样都是汉语整体中的一部分，可以增加语言的鲜明性和生动性。
